IGA Duchemin Family: the largest organic vegetable garden on a supermarket roof in Canada

Over the past 20 years, NEUF has been the architect  for the construction and renovation of more than 150 IGA grocery stores across the province. Although united under one banner, each grocery store has its unique challenges. Completed in June 2016, IGA extra Family Duchemin of Ville Saint-Laurent allowed NEUF architects to show ingenuity.

Ville Saint-Laurent required a 50% green roof. While many would have seen this requirement as a constraint, the team instead seized the opportunity to make this IGA a project that stands out. With a 24 750pi² (2300m²) cultivable rooftop, the IGA of Ville Saint-Laurent is the supermarket with the largest organic vegetable garden in Canada, in addition to being the first to sell products growing on its roof. Local food takes on a new meaning when fruits and vegetables sold come directly from the roof and only have to be taken down stairs to be sold.

The green roof was elaborated by La Ligne Verte, in collaboration with NEUF architect(e)s. It was officially inaugurated in July 2017 and was awarded at the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities' Awards of Excellence in 2022. In addition to the vegetable garden, Alvéole has installed eight hives that produce about 200kg (600pots) of honey a year.
