The reuse of the main structure, with a seismic retrofit enabled a complete transformation of the exterior envelope. The introduction of skylights in the main market space and installation of a new polished concrete slab brightens the existing typology. The design’s prioritization of flexible spaces allows easy adaptation by different tenants, many of whom have chosen to work with us for further development of their individual spaces.
The intent of adding a food and lifestyle centric function to the shopping centre was to provide a vibrant space to the community which could include additional activities outside the normal shopping activity. The centre of the market includes a chef’s demonstration kitchen that attracts visitors. An outdoor plaza connects the complex to the public space and allows for seasonal and weekend events like farmer's markets and concerts.
The early project decision to renovate the existing building is inherently sustainable. The idea of the food-centric offering was to attract and gather local businesses who they themselves have sustainable practices built into their offering.
